CONG Aug. 2014

Our Cong/Corrib Cruise Trip

On Wed 6th August, 56 of our members headed off to Cong for the last of our Summer day trips. On arrival in Cong, we were met by Patrick, the friendly Captain of the “Isle of Inisfree” ferry. Luckily the weather stayed fine for us as we sailed across Lough Corrib to Inchagoill Island, the lake’s most famous island. As we sailed across the beautiful lake, we were served with lovely tea/coffee and home-made scones all the while being entertained by no less than two musicians, Stephen and Martin. Martin was an 83 year old who played the accordion and sang all the old favourites to his heart’s content.

On arrival on the Island, the captain of the boat gave us a guided tour and detailed history of St. Patrick’s 5th century monastic site. Historic points of interest include St Patrick’s Church, the stone of Lugna (Gravestone of St. Patrick’s navigator) ,The Church of the Saints (Built in 1180 AD by the Augustinian Monks of Cong) and the burial tomb of the Bishop of Tuam 1128 AD. It was a very interesting and peaceful place and we would have liked to have more time to explore the Island.

We cruised back to Cong again after our brief to the famous island and browsed around this scenic village of “Quiet Man” fame.

On our way home, we enjoyed a lovely meal in the Meadow Court Hotel in Loughrea .It was a nice finish to yet another very enjoyable day out with friends
